Exercise While You Work

I tried to operate my laptop while riding my exercise bike one day, and while it wasn't very comfortable, it made me think: Wouldn't it be great if I could surf the Internet or catch up on e-mail while exercising?

Apparently I'm not the only one who's got exercise on the brain. Dr. James Levine, endocrinologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota designed a treadmill for the office. Workers walk at a slow but steady pace while working. If you want to sit, you can pull up a stool. Not everyone will think this is a great idea but for those of us working at our desks 10 or more hours a day, and finding time to exercise is a challenge, it would be a dream come true. I want one.

Weight Loss Begins With Cleanse

If you've ever had a colonic you'd know, you can easily lose five pounds just cleaning up that bad boy colon or yours. Sorry if this is gross, but hey, there you go. If you eat meat especially and don't get much fiber, the stuff gets a bit stuck, that's all I'm saying. Clean it out, and you'll feel better, plus you'll lose a few pounds in the process.

If the colonic approach doesn't appeal, an annual or bi-annual cleanse is the way to go.

Spring is a great time to do an annual cleanse. You clean your closets, right? Why not clean your body too? Once you get your colon in good shape, besides losing several pounds in the process, you'll be absorbing more nutrients when you eat, creating a healthier system.

Use Paraway Pack for one to three months for a healthy colon. Many people lose a substantial amount of weight doing a cleanse.

Here's the 5-step Approach to Better Health.

One More Bite's Readers Get Results

"Thank you for your story on the web it was such an inspiration. I have been working really hard at the gym for the past 5 weeks and my husband has noticed the difference. I can see my body has a new shape but I made the mistake of weighing my self and I had put on a kilo. I was ready to throw in the towel. I have been eating healthy. I now know what is happing with my muscle and fat in my body. Thank you. I'm going to keep going." Regards, Claire

That's what I'm talking about!

Keep those cards and letters coming folks. I really enjoy reading your successes (and failures too) so I can devise new materials and address whatever's on your mind.

Food: The History of Chocolate

Supplement News

OTC (Over-the-counter) Medicines

Big controversy amongst scientists over the latest published results of studies for certain supplements. The results were skewed to give the results they wanted, which is nearly always the case, so when you hear eggs are good, eggs are bad, eat more fiber, eat less fruit, and so on, just take it with a grain of salt.

Common sense must prevail. Studies that prove a drug's efficacy are published in the PDR (Physician's Desk Reference). These are drugs and supplements (and even foods) that do what they say they do, and doctors rely on this reference text when prescribing. If you want to try an alternative and it's in the PDR (such as Bios Life Complete), just ask your doctor about it. He or she can then look it up and offer you a healthier alternative.

Eating a Balanced Diet ala Dave Barry

In "Stay Fit & Healthy Until You're Dead" Dave Barry says, "To make sure your digestive system gets the 'raw materials' it needs, at every meal you should eat at least 1 food from each of the 15 Basic Food Families: Fruits, Vegetables, Meats, Fishes, Loaves, Hors d'Oeuvres, Canned Goods, Jellies, Snacks, Shakes, Additives, Eels, Those Little Wax Bottles Filled with Colorful Sugar Water, Pez and Spam.

Read Dave Barry's Guide to Life which includes Stay Fit & Healthy Until You're Dead.

Kids Nutrition

KidsNutrition.org: USDA/ARS Children's Nutrition Research Center Calculators for Kids: Healthy Eating, Body Mass Index & Energy also Adult Energy Needs and BMI. Consumer News includes large archive of FAQs on topics like childhood nutrition, school lunches, picky eaters (who knows one of those?) and more. Tips to dress up vegetables so kids will eat them.

Enough with the drugs already! Every time you turn around the drug companies have invented some new disease or propose a pill we should all be taking. Does anyone else see something wrong with drugging 6-year olds to keep them quiet in class? Kids are naturally fidgety; that's not a disease.

Hudson's Bay High School Kids Raise $91,733.17 for Doernbecher Children's Hospital in 2006

Hudson's Bay High School leads the nation in raising funds for charity. Every year a select group of boys are chosen by faculty and staff. These boys go on to raise funds and then perform a two-hour show call the Mr. Hudson's Bay Pageant. See the Hudson's Bay High School Wiki which currently shows the kid's efforts brought $$65,748.90 in 2007 and the Eleanor Copps Trust donated $72,965 to the pageant bringing the total for the 2007 pageant to $138,443.90. The show is a spoof of the Miss America Pageant and is put on entirely by students (with a wee bit of assistance from advisors).

Since the kids of Hudson's Bay started this project, about a dozen years ago, they've raised over $500,000 for Doernbecher Children's Hospital, a Portland Oregon facility which provides treatment for kids suffering cancer and other illnesses at no cost to the parents.

What I like best about their approach is they aren't out hawking candy bars but rather simply seeking donations for a good cause. This is community service at its finest, and I'm very proud to be a parent of a former Hudson's Bay High School student, Moses Cochrane. Moses is currently a Junior at University of Washington.[Update, Moses graduated from UW June 2009]

Getting Enough Nutrition After Weight Loss Surgery

If you or someone you know has had a gastric bypass, banding or any type of weight .loss surgery, you know how difficult it is to get proper nutrition. The fact is with a stomach 1/10 the size of normal, you simply cannot eat enough food to get the vitamins and minerals you need to stay healthy. It's also not practical to take vitamin tables as they are also too big for your new mini stomach.

Convenience Packs Cost More: Don't Be Fooled

I spied 6-pack boxes of Odwalla food bars. I happen to like Odwalla so I looked closer. Then I noticed the bars were smaller than the ones I've had in the past. The box included 6, 1 ounce bars, where a regular bar is 2.1 oz, so you're getting less than half the size, but here's the kicker: the price was more for the 6-in-a-box per ounce! Yikes. Don't get snared by this packaging trick.

Fresh Fruit Cups Removed from Wendy's Menu

No surprise there. People may say they want healthier choices, but reality is they don't order fresh fruit for the kiddies, and why would they? You can get that at the grocery store. Why pay a premium? A better idea? Cut back on how often you go to McD's or Taco Time. Everyone in the family will drop a few pounds.

BellyGraph.com

Here's a fun way to graph your progress. I created a facsimile of my progress when I lost my 80 pound pregnancy weight gain. I couldn't put the correct dates as they only went back to 2000. Notice how some weeks there was no loss, some weeks there was even a gain, but overall progress was slowly and steadily downward. That's what you can expect too, if you make slow, steady changes in your usual behavior.
