Lower Cholesterol Without Drugs

High cholesterol is directly related to obesity and elevated blood sugar. High blood pressure is often a direct result of obesity. If your cholesterol levels are too high, you have high blood pressure, you're overweight, or you are diabetic or borderline diabetic, reducing your cholesterol and/or blood pressure is a critical first step in reducing your weight and creating better health.

Instead of jumping right into drug therapy to reduce cholesterol (Statin drugs) or lower blood pressure consider the alternatives. A nutritional approach can often provide the same result with no side effects. Statin drugs and blood pressure medications do not address the cause of your high cholesterol levels or high blood pressure either, while a nutritional approach often can.

Some believe Statins may be adding to the elevated blood glucose problem which you certainly don't want. All drugs (including aspirin) have side effects, but so does a nutritional approach, it's side effect is better health. Which do you prefer?

Herbs, supplements and food all take time to bring your system back to proper balance. Giving it a 90-day trial is a good place to start. Most likely you'll know far before 90 days are over whether what you are doing is working, but sometimes you'll need to wait to decide, just as some people don't get instant results with EFT while others do.

When Getting Fit Goes Too Far

You can overdo fitness, the same as you can overdo eating pie. Take a look at a few "ladies" who've taken their fitness levels to the extreme. Warning: This may frighten small children and animals.

Also, please note. These freakish results do not occur without steroids, so ladies especially, don't be afraid to lift weights. There's no easier way to get in great shape; just maybe stop before you start to resemble The Incredible Hulk!

Q & A: For the Weight Loss Queen

Q. How can EFT be permanent?

A. The same way you can be afraid of spiders as a child, but no longer are as an adult. Your brain is capable of believing you can achieve a lower weight, if that's what you really want. If you're unsure that's what you want, that's okay too. Some people are perfectly fine at a higher weight and just need to accept themselves first, weight loss comes later.

Q. I am overwhelmed sometimes at all I am trying to keep track of and do.

A. That's why it's best to just take one small piece (one issue) and work on that. Later you can work on something else, and then something else. The thing is, at first looking at all you want to do, it's too big. There are too many old issues, too many new issues, too much going on in your life, and it can be overwhelming.

The best part is you don't have to deal individually with every single issue you identify, basically because sometimes when you deal with one, a lot of others also are affected. Just take things one day at a time. You don't have to handle it all at once. Weight gain usually happens over the course of many years, so allow yourself some time to take the weight back off.

Enjoy the special occasions and eat like a healthy person, and extra weight falls right off. It's true. You won't be deprived or miss out on your favorites. Anyone that knows me knows I love sweets, and I love to eat.

On Exercise: Doing it Holiday Style

Stringing the lights stretch: Notice how you're decorating your holiday tree and you're doing a lot of bending, reaching and stretching? That's exercise, and you didn't even know it! That happens all the time. Changes to turn chores into exercise.

It doesn't have to be sit ups and pushups or any other things you remember from gym class in school. It can be having fun with the kids on the floor, kneading bread dough, or any number of other activities.

Open your mind to the possibility of really getting what you want. Start by reading all the OMB weight loss articles, then get The Daily Bites, and learn EFT. Today is the day. Not tomorrow, not next Monday, but right here, right now.

Food & Cooking Tips

Reduce fat in gravies by skimming off the fat once it's cooked. Let it sit for a minute and you'll see the fat rise to the top. Simple skim some off, instant calorie savings

Do you love olives? I do, but why do I keep popping them in my mouth? Mostly, it's because there's only an open jar of black olives a few times a year, but frankly, they aren't all that delicious so just have three or four and be done with it.

Cookies, fudge, goodies oh my! Yes, this is the season, and these are treats we don't get year-round, so the tendency is to over do it, but remember you can store and save for later too. Seal-a- meal or other packaging works, and there's always the freezer Just have a few, and totally enjoy it, then save the rest for another day. No big deal. There's no crime in enjoying the holidays but turning it into a "Eating frenzy because I won't get these goodies for another year" is silly. It doesn't need to be that way this year or ever again.

The holidays are the best time of year to practice and see how EFT works. You'll still enjoy the holiday food, probably more than ever before, so don't be afraid to try.

Food Fun: Winter Treats

Snowflake-Tillas: Remember making snowflakes as a child from folded paper? Same thing, only we're going to eat these.

Ingredients:

  1. 6 Tortillas
  2. Canola or light vegetable oil
  3. Powdered Sugar (confectioners) OR Powdered Splenda (recipe for Powdered Splenda below) * Edible glitter (optional)

1. Heat oven to 400 degrees. Warm tortillas (about 15 seconds) in microwave.

2. Individually fold the tortillas in half once and then in half again, so you end up with a "V" shaped wedge (it will be thick).

3. Using clean scissors, or knife cut pieces out of your tortilla triangles. Make slices, circles, squares, etc. Practice first with a sheet of paper, cut to a circle, to see the snowflake effect. Unfold the tortillas.

4. Lightly brush tops of snowflakes with canola or vegetable oil and place on cookie sheet slightly apart. Bake until lightly browned and crisp (about 4 min).

5. Sift powdered sugar on top of snowflakes while still warm.

For extra sparkle, sprinkle on edible glitter, available at TheBakersKitchen.net, Sugarcraft.com and Kitchencrafts.com (get their catalog).

** Recipe Powdered Splenda:

Add Splenda to food processor or coffee grinder, pulse until very fine. That was easy!

Makes 6 Snowflakes. Grab the kids and enjoy a Saturday afternoon. Remember, tortillas are not exactly low cal or low carb, so when you enjoy these, think indulgence (and that's okay because you've learned to enjoy an indulgence, right?)
