Why Use EFT for Weight Loss?

If your goal is to lose some weight, starting first on your emotional issues gives you the best chance of success

It's a small victory to lose a few pounds only to watch them creep right back as you slowly return to your regular eating and behavior habits. Instead focus on the why, not the how. In other words, what reasons lie beneath the surface which drive us to eat, drink or lie on the couch all day.

Those are the issues and events forming the basis of who you are and how you are. Some are obvious such as how we label ourselves: "I've always been fat," or "I just can't lose any weight," and others are not so obvious such as why we crave certain foods at certain times. But they all can be addressed with EFT, even when we don't know what they are.

If you continue to do the things you say you don't want to do, or you can't seem to find the motivation to get started, if you feel like you're a hamster stuck in your wheel, then you probably have emotional issues weighing you down. EFT helps you get past those barriers.

We all have memories and events in our past that sometimes leap out at unexpected moments - and some of us find it prompts us to want to eat - ice cream for instance. Maybe you used to go to the Boardwalk with your dad and he always bought you an ice cream cone. Our memories are hidden in our minds, yet they cause events in the present, whether we're aware of them or not.

If you are looking at EFT as your magic bullet, something you can do once or twice and voila you're suddenly different, then you'll likely be disappointed. A sudden shift in your thinking can certainly occur and does quite often for many people, but you must do the work. Change isn't hard but it doesn't always come easy.

Many people experience excellent results from one or two sessions, and sometimes they have done years of work on themselves already. They may have read lots of books, and tried many things and now the time is finally right. They've had enough and don't want to take it anymore, so the next thing they try, does seem like magic, only they've forgotten all the effort that preceded it. They are the people who say, "Something finally just clicked."

Herb that Temporarily Removes Ability to Taste Sweet

Putting a small bit of the powered herb Gymnema sylvestris instantly removes your ability to taste sweet, meaning, you simply will not detect sugar at all. If you struggle with the urge to eat sweets, no matter what time of day, you can simply choose instead to put a bit of this herb on your tongue and goodbye urge. Who wants to eat chocolate that tastes like, well, icky? Marshmallows are really gross, and cookies taste like sawdust. Effects last up to a few hours, so I don't suggest using this right before you eat, simply because many foods have a sweet taste, including meat.

Gymnema sylvestre is a woody climbing plant that grows in the tropical forests of central and southern India. The Hindi name for it is gurmar, "destroyer of sugar." Gymnema has been used in India for the treatment of diabetes for over 2,000 years as it reduces blood sugar, and therefore must be used cautiously, especially if you are taking medication to lower blood sugar.

I keep a small baggie of the powder handy. When I've already eaten plenty of my favorite dessert for instance, I'll go ahead and put some on my tongue and the desire to have another piece is gone, since it wouldn't taste good anyway. If you'd like a small sample of Gymnema powder, send me $2 for postage along with your name and address and I'll send you a small packet right away. (U.S. addresses only, please. My address listed at the bottom of this page).

It's fun to do taste tests with your kids. Bring out a tray of chocolate chips, coconut, marshmallows, Kool-aid, and cookies or crackers and have them try a nibble. Then have them put some powder on their tongue, wait a second and try the samples again. You'll laugh yourself silly when you see the faces they'll make. They all suddenly turn to leave too, it's really odd. So I love to call after them, "Do you want another bite?"

Together with using EFT for the cravings, Gymnema can help you eliminate your patterned response to certain food cues whenever you like.

Great Snack for Low Carbers

Low carbers high protein snack "Final Frontier Jerky" has been to Mir aboard space shuttle Atlantis, made another jaunt to the International Space Station and accompanied private astronaut Mark Shuttleworth on his Soyuz flight to the ISS. An excellent high protein snack.

OceanSpray 100% Cranberry Juice

Pure cranberry juice is an excellent drink, loaded with bioflavnoids and other healthy nutrients, but don't be fooled by fancy packaging or labeling. You don't have to pay inflated prices for pure cranberry juice. I paid nearly four dollars for a bottle of cranberry juice and now I know better. Remember Cranberry Juice Cocktail contains sugar in the form of corn syrup. Remember the news item above about corn syrup being largely responsible for the obesity epidemic? I tend to agree. Avoid corn syrup and go for pure 100% juice drinks. Dilute them yourself with sparkling water, mix ad match flavors. Make your own popsicles.

How to Lose Weight When You're Too Busy to Cook

Think Home Cooked Fast Food

Pre-washed salad mix - straight out of the bag, or add some chopped vegetables - I like cucumber, tomatoes and green onions. Add some fat-free croutons (not too many) and a sprinkle of cheese (if you're inclined, I personally never add cheese to anything) and you're good to go.

I also favor fat-free and/or low carb bottled salad dressings - you aren't doing yourself any favors by eating full-fat dressings or dairy products. Save your fat calories for something worthwhile like good quality oils, and a dessert now and then.

Cut-up vegetables. I know a fellow who brings in a small baggie of chopped vegetables every morning and they look so darn good I finally broke down and got some too. Big chunks of cauliflower and broccoli. Add cherry tomatoes, or chop a cucumber. They have these in pre-cut bags at the grocery now too.

Supplement your frozen entrees with some frozen vegetables. When I put in a microwave entree to cook, I also get a pan, add some water and toss in some frozen vegetables (I'm especially fond of mixed vegetables but I add extra corn), then while the frozen cooks, the vegetables come to a boil and they're all done at the same time. Takes about five minutes.

Try all the varieties of frozen meals available - some are very good, but do check the nutrient labels. Some are very high in sugar, all are high in sodium - but that's the price you pay for convenience. They are so much better than a regular diet of fast food, I think the trade off is worth it. Many new low carb brands too!

Weight & Health Issues in the News

Schools Taking Action Against Obesity - File this under "what were they thinking" to bring vending machines, and fast food restaurants into schools in the first place? Sheesh. It doesn't take a genius to know that kids will not make good choices about what they eat for lunch.

Chew the Right Thing

My new favorite site: Hungry-Girl.com is fun, witty, and chock full of great tips, and various food items, some brand new, and why they are a better choice than their alternative. Great ideas.

Just remember, simply putting a low carb count on the label does not make a food a better choice. Read the label - multiply the numbers by how much you'll actually eat, so if it says the package is four but you know you'll eat the whole thing, just multiple the numbers by four, and if it still fits, then go ahead and enjoy!

Create Nutrition Labels for Your Recipes

You may have heard of Ron Johnson's wonderful site, NutritionData.com but now it's even better. Ever wonder what's the nutrient breakdown in one of your own recipes? Want to create your own food labels for the recipes you use, or a cookbook your writing perhaps?.

Recent Headline: "Corn Syrup Contributes to Obesity." Well duh. Another huge news story about the patently obvious.

Proctor & Gamble Wins Approval to Add Olestra to Microwave Popcorn

Victory dance for Proctor & Gamble (P&G). If you don't mind the "side effects" you'll be happy to hear that P&G has won approval from the Food and Drug Administration for its fat substitute olestra to be used in microwave popcorn. I'm unsure why P&G is so crazy to force this miserable excuse for a fat reducing product on an unsuspecting public, but if you'd like to make an informed decision, read more. Facts About Olestra and The Problems with Olestra (check No. 3, where it refers to the gastrointestinal disturbances).

Listing of products which contain Olestra

I'm not saying don't eat these products, but if you do, use the Olestra excuse as a way to control your portion size and you won't suffer the consequences. I can't think of any better way to guarantee I'll never eat a whole bag of chips again.

The Grapple - When an Apple Meets a Grape

Speaking of tasting parties, I came across a new food this weekend called a Grapple - An apple that tastes like a grape, only it mostly smells like a grape and tastes like a very good apple. My local WinCo grocery had them - four in a nifty hard plastic container (which apparently is built to last - wish I could think of another use for it). The apple was exquisite! Crunchy, juicy, hint of grape - very good. I give them four stars. The downside was the cost - over a buck an apple, but hey, once the masses catch on the price is sure to fall.

I didn't know how it was created or whether it was genetically modified (a process I don't usually widely support) or perhaps some cross-breading so I want to check and found that the Grapple is produced by a "bathing" or flavor infusion process - in other words it isn't actually a new version so much as a new way to introduce flavors to apples. Part of the 3-Apples-A-Day campaign started by Tammi Flynn (see below).

Lose the Weight by Eating More Fruit - Real People, Eating Real Food, Lost Real Fat

3 Apple Day PlanWhen Registered Dietitian Tammi Flynn of Gold’s Gym in Wenatchee, WA came up with the "3 Apple-a-Day" Plan the idea was to add more fresh produce to each meal with a convenient Washington Apple.

But when results came in from their Gold’s Gym Challenge, and 346 people had lost a phenomenal 6,000 lbs in just 12 weeks, it was clear that Tammi had discovered something big. A healthy replacement for high-cost diet aids AND the fat loss answer for the whole country! Tammi helped 346 finishers reach their goals."

Queasy Pops

"Queasy Pops are a very safe and natural way to help with any type of motion sickness or medication-induced nausea," said pharmacologist Tanya Gurvich, Pharm. D.

Regular Queasy Pops are available in the following natural and delicious flavors: Sour Raspberry, and Sour Lemon, Ginger, Lavender, Peppermint , Cinnamon, Papaya, and Green Tea with Lemon.

I noticed they have a Ginger flavor - ginger (the herb) is
great for motion sickness, so if it contains real ginger it
could be useful for that as well - ask them about it.

Making Low Carb Work for You

If you've tried Atkins or the South Beach Diet and you still find it a puzzling nightmare of what to eat, simplify things. Eat more fresh foods, fruits and vegetables, grains and meats, some cheese is fine but don't make it a staple (too high in fat), and milk products if you can tolerate them fine, but go for the low fat versions. Milk products simply have fat removed to become low fat - nothing is added, unlike low fat versions of most other products where they've added more sugar and changed the ratio.

This whole business about net carbs is about to blow up like a puffer fish. It's a silly way to look at carbs anyway. Far better to think wholesome - what did nature create for us? What did we create in a lab? Which makes more sense for your health? If you won't eat carrots because you think they are too high in carbs, or you will eat a low carb brownie, or drink a low carb beer, but won't eat fresh corn on the cob, you are fooling yourself. Choosing better carb choices is an excellent idea but limiting fruits and vegetables is plain silly.

The main problem with the low carb products such as low carb cake mix or low carb cookies is the tendency to eat more because (1) they aren't as tasty or satisfying as the real thing, and (2) you think they are low in carb so why not? Why not have two or three? Hey, they're low carb! That was the trap that foiled the plans of the low fat eaters. They were fooled into thinking low fat Entenmann's was a good thing, while they still ate the entire package, even though it clearly said on the wrapper that it "served 6."

I may be one of the few people in America that actually gets four "servings" from a pint of Haagen Daz, but that's only because I eat it directly from the carton, and I make a point of only eating about a quarter of the container then I put it back - I've learned to discipline myself to want the "taste" not fullness - at least not from Haagen Daz.

Have you noticed that in ads for low carb products they make a big deal of telling you it's only 2 net carbs per serving, but they NEVER say how much is a serving? What's up with that? They might be using ridiculously small serving sizes so the 2 net carbs becomes more like 6 or 8 net carbs - and those add up.

Living the Low Carb Lifestyle

Confusion abounds over what a low carb diet really means. It does mean avoiding processed sugars and flours, but it does not mean avoiding good, healthy foods such as beans, grains, or whole fresh fruits. I recently discovered a website that contains lists of healthy carbs.

A Beginner's guide to Carbohydrates"

Food Trivia

Ice is a food and like any food, it can go "bad." The food code in the United States and Canada both define ice as food. We eat more ice than we do bread, nearly a hundred million tons a year, or about two pounds per person per day.

Sugar Alcohols - What They Are - Why They Are Deducted in Net Carb Calculations

Since sugar alcohols are indigestible, listed as Maltitol, Sorbitol, Mannitol, and Xylitol in ingredient lists, they are removed from the carb count along with fiber to create the new "net carb" count. I'm not a fan of the whole net carb thing - I think it's misleading and will cause people to consume many more calories than they suspect in the name of the low carb count.

The main problem with sugar alcohols is their propensity for causing intestinal distress when the recommended serving size is exceeded. Since I don't know anyone who pays much attention to "serving sizes" it is a good idea to know what you're getting into.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) has petitioned the FDA to require foods containing one or more grams per serving of sorbitol or other sugar alcohol, such as mannitol, to carry a more informative notice. CSPI’s petition recommends that labels state: “NOTICE: This product contains sorbitol, which may cause diarrhea, bloating, and abdominal pain. Not suitable for consumption by children. To protect yourself, start by eating no more than one serving at a time.”

I don't mention this to be an alarmist but rather to inform. Many people suffer serious health problems that can be directly attributed to what they eat, and discovering these associations goes a long way toward better health. That's another reason why tracking what you eat, one week a month, is important and why I recommend it fairly often.

Excellent article about sugar alcohols

Stick to less that 100(g) of sugar alcohols a day and you'll probably avoid the unpleasant side effects. If nothing else, it may be an easy way to limit your quantity, so it's not a bad thing at all!

What I've been Reading: Book Reviews: Food - Diet - Books

Candyfreak by Steve Almond is a delightful romp through the mind of a true "candy freak." Almond is way out there in his quest to find the perfect candy bar. This book gave me a new appreciation for the smaller local grocery's and their candy counters as that's where you'll find those regional specialties.

One bar I thought would especially be worth trying is called the 5-Star Chocolate Bars by Lake Champlain Chocolates so I sought it out and found that you don't want to be buying chocolate online this time of year. The shipping costs could send your kid through college! Dang. I'll do a special report this Fall/Winter on where to get good eats online ;-) meanwhile support your local grocer! I did buy a white chocolate Hershey's Peanut Butter cup yesterday. Didn't try it yet - my plan is to cut each piece into four and share it with friends - I like tasting parties. Fun, everyone gets a taste. You don't have to eat the whole thing to get the goody out of your treats.

How to Buy Chocolate and Then Forget to Eat it

If you'd like to learn how to obtain quality chocolate, put it in a drawer and forget it's there, learn to use EFT and NLP techniques to conquer your emotional eating. That's what I've done, and it's such a freeing thing to be able to feel right with the world, be happy with myself, my shape, and not feel controlled by something like food. I eat what I want, but I do make an effort to make good choices (usually). For example, last night I baked a cake I made on Easter and totally loved (Better than Sex cake). This thing is nothing more than yellow cake, vanilla pudding and tons of whipped cream - not exactly diet fare, but when I can't get a certain food out of my head, I usually either make it or go and get it, and then totally enjoy it. That's what I mean when I said I eat what I want. So today, I have an entire cake in my refrigerator.

Did I have a piece for breakfast? No. My husband bought me some fresh local raspberries at the Farmer's Market yesterday, and I wanted them so I had some on my cereal this morning. The cake sits and waits. When I was in the kitchen I noted the remnants of last night's grocery shopping. I huge individually wrapped cinnamon roll on the counter. I just "knew" I was going to want to eat something sweet last night since baking the cake was bound to make me crazy so I'd bought the following...

Fitness and Exercise News

A Granny in Spandex was reported in The Columbian, May 18, 2004. Lena M. Howard, 74, started weight lifting after a winning battle against breast cancer in 2002. Howard says, "I just went to tone up my body. I had no energy because the radiation knocks the energy out." After visiting the Better Life Fitness Center in Redford, Michigan, she started by working with Randy and Brenda Woody, husband-and-wife bodybuilders and trainers.

Once she started, she just kept going and today she's the proud title holder of the world record 90-pound bench press in the 70-75 category. Way to go Lena! She credits lifting weights twice a week and walking a mile every other day as helping her to lose some weight.
